We are looking for a seasoned Gastroenterology Pre-Op and PACU Registered Nurse for a fast-paced ambulatory surgery center in Manhattan. You will care for patients through the full procedure day, from pre-op preparation through post-anesthesia recovery and a safe discharge, for colonoscopy and endoscopy procedures.
The role
- 40 hours a week: four 10-hour shifts, every week
- $52 to $63 per hour, depending on experience
- Outpatient ambulatory surgery center, same-day discharge
- Manhattan, New York (10029)
Pre-op care
- Initial patient assessment: medical history, allergies, medications and NPO status
- Verify consent, procedure site and patient identification (surgical safety checklist)
- Establish IV access and give pre-op medications as ordered
- Educate patients and families on the procedure, anesthesia and post-op care
- Work with anesthesia and the procedure team so each patient is ready, and escalate any abnormal findings or safety concerns
PACU
- Immediate post-anesthesia recovery care
- Continuous monitoring of airway, breathing, circulation, vital signs and neurological status
- Manage pain, nausea and vomiting, and other post-op symptoms per protocol
- Recognize and respond to complications such as respiratory depression, hypotension, bleeding or agitation
- Give analgesics, antiemetics and oxygen therapy as ordered
- Bring patients safely to discharge criteria (for example, Aldrete scoring) and keep anesthesia and physicians updated
- Accurate, timely EMR documentation
Discharge
- Confirm patients meet discharge criteria
- Clear verbal and written discharge instructions for patients and caregivers: pain management, activity limits and follow-up
- Coordinate a safe discharge and confirm transportation
What we are looking for
- Active Registered Nurse license (New York State or compact-state equivalent)
- Current BLS (required) and ACLS (required, or obtained within a set timeframe)
- At least 4 to 5 years of acute care, ambulatory surgery or hospital RN experience, ideally in PACU, the Emergency Department or Level 1 Trauma, or perioperative and surgical services
- Ambulatory surgery center experience, across specialties such as gastroenterology, orthopedics, ENT, urology, general surgery and pain procedures
- Excellent IV skills and conscious sedation recovery experience
- Confident with EMR systems
You think clearly when a patient changes quickly, you can manage several patients at once in a busy unit, and patients and families feel looked after. The role involves standing, walking and physically supporting patients throughout the shift.
